Linux has had a lot of trouble establishing itself in the consumer desktop space, but it has had plenty of success as an Internet based server operating system. From 1999-2001, when I was taking graduate studies at the University of Phoenix online, time after time I wrote my class papers about Linux, and how I felt that the embedded system or small device appliance market was almost certain - eventually - to come to Linux, and when it did, it was likely to be one of the dominant systems, because of, for no other reason, the low cost of these devices, and therefore the need to have a low cost operating system.

Well, Christopher Smart has also noticed this, and it is finally taking place. Look at his article and see the numerous places where some kind of Linux technology IS already in place and being widely used.

Their slick exteriors ably hide the hard technical core underneath, meaning that Australians won’t know they’re using Linux – or even care – any more than they would care what operating system their toaster runs.
